THERAPIST
Emma Cohen, LPC
Emma Cohen, LPC, fervently believes symptoms are purposeful explanations of how we learned to adapt and cope in times of stress. Emma practices from a non-pathological lens, and feels deeply honored to work alongside those struggling with a variety of concerns: depressive disorders, anxiety disorders, sexual abuse cases, complex trauma, disordered eating, addiction and neurodivergence.
Emma obtained her undergraduate degree in Human Development from Virginia Tech. After working in the non-profit sector for two years, she was reminded of her passion for the counseling profession, and returned to Virginia Tech to obtain Master’s Degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling in 2020.
Emma believes in the power of incorporating mind, body and spirit as we are incapable of healing without the consideration of somatic experiences. As a trained EMDR practitioner, she interweaves this neurological, gold-standard trauma treatment into her practice. Emma has found herself especially drawn to work with members of marginalized communities such as BIPOC, first-generation immigrants and queer individuals–while also humbly acknowledging she will never fully understand these lived experiences.
Emma’s love for this profession is clearly seen through her work. She feels extremely grateful to bear witness to humans’ rawest, most vulnerable moments. Her central goal is to allow clients to feel heard while providing a safe, non-judgmental and loving atmosphere. She works with individuals aged 12 and up, couples, and families.
