SCHEDULING COORDINATOR

Carmen Serrano

Born in the Dominican Republic, Carmen Serrano immigrated to the United States as a teenager in search of the “American Dream.”

Throughout her life in the U.S., she lived in Rhode Island and New York before eventually settling and raising a family (2 daughters) in Stafford, Virginia.

Carmen is bilingual and fluent in both English and Spanish. Carmen has a breadth of experience in the medical field and mental health community.

Carmen began her journey in the medical field in 2004 as a Health Information Specialist for Mary Washington Hospital. During these 4 years Carmen ensured that client records were kept current and that all services provided to the clients were recorded in the client chart.

Following her experience at Mary Washington Hospital, Carmen transitioned to her role as a Patient Services Representative for the Community Health Center of the Rappahannock Region. During her 7 years at the Community Health Center, Carmen was able to engage more with patients and obtained her certification as a medical interpreter (English to Spanish certification) to be able to extend medical services to the Latinx community.

Carmen found this work to be very meaningful as well as rewarding, however, she longed to be able to do more. In 2015, a representative from a counseling agency in Northern Virginia reached out to Carmen after they had seen an influx in Spanish speaking client referrals. It was then that Carmen began her journey in the mental health field with Health Connect America as their interpreter, translator, and Administrative Assistant. During these 5 years Carmen met with children and their families to help interpret their stories and concerns with in-home counselors, TDT workers, outpatient therapists, teachers, administrative staff, case managers, etc. Additionally, in this role, Carmen was able to translate all of Health Connect America’s documents in Spanish providing easier access and understanding of mental health services for Spanish speaking families whom were seeking counseling services.

With a desire to be closer to her home, Carmen joined the team of Resilience Counseling in February 2020 as a Scheduling Coordinator. Carmen understands the challenges in obtaining services and wants to continue to help any and everyone who seeks help no matter your background or experiences.

In her spare time Carmen enjoys cooking, listening to music, being with family, and her little dog, Valentino.
