Laura Cook, MA, Resident In Counseling
Laura Cook, Resident In Counseling, believes that every experience, whether good or bad, can inspire us if we learn to look inward for answers. She also believes that reaching out for help is the bravest step anyone can take in their journey in life and applauds you for being here right now.
Laura obtained her Bachelor of Science in Psychology with a minor in Addiction studies at VCU. She spent much of her weekends pre-Covid-19 helping at events at Mcshin Foundation (an in-patient rehabilitation center) and gaining knowledge about alcohol and substance use disorders by aiding individuals in understanding basic hygiene and self-care once a week as a group leader and attending other various groups and meetings.
Laura received her MA in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Marymount University in Arlington, Virginia. She considers herself fortunate to have been part of an HRSA fellowship aiding underserved areas and populations. During this time, Laura shaped a client-focused, mindfulness-based cognitive behavioral therapy approach, blending calming and grounding techniques while working to alleviate faulty cognitions to change our emotions and, eventually, our actions. Laura gained experience at private practices and a non-profit which also helped her refine her approach to what will work best for each person and their current and past life situations.
